Mountains have a way of making us feel small. Their immense size and solid foundations remind us of something that seems permanent in a world where so much is constantly changing. In Psalm 125, the psalmist uses Mount Zion to describe those who trust in Yahweh. Like the mountain itself, they are firmly established and cannot be moved.
But the psalm offers more than an image of stability. It gives us a picture of God’s protection.
“As the mountains surround Jerusalem, so Yahweh surrounds his people from this time forward and forever more.” (Psalm 125:2)
Jerusalem was surrounded by mountains, providing a natural defense for the city. The psalmist uses this familiar landscape to illustrate a far greater truth: Yahweh surrounds His people with His constant care. Our circumstances may change, our strength may fail, and our troubles may seem overwhelming, but God’s faithfulness does not depend on our circumstances.
Matthew Henry points out that the righteous may indeed experience oppression. The rod of wickedness may fall upon their lives, affecting their families, their possessions, their freedom, and their peace. Yet the psalm promises that wickedness will not have the final word. Yahweh will not allow the rod of the wicked to remain indefinitely over the inheritance of the righteous.
Henry also recognizes a reason for this promise. Prolonged suffering can tempt even faithful people to abandon what is right. God knows our weaknesses. He understands the pressures we face and provides the grace we need to remain faithful to Him.
The psalm concludes with a prayer for those who are good and upright in heart, followed by a warning about those who turn aside to crooked ways. It reminds us that our choices matter. Trusting Yahweh means more than claiming His promises; it means continuing to walk in His ways.
Psalm 125 invites us to lift our eyes beyond the troubles of the present and rest in the character of our faithful God. We may not always understand what He allows, but we can trust that He has not abandoned His people.
The final words offer a fitting prayer and promise: “Peace be on Israel.”
May we find that same peace as we trust in Yahweh, who surrounds His people now and forever.
As the mountains surround Jerusalem, so Yahweh surrounds His people, now and forever. Whatever trials we may face, we can rest in the faithfulness of the One who holds us secure. May we trust in Him, walk in His ways, and know His peace.
“Peace be on Israel.” — Psalm 125:5
